Emma’s Story

Like many graduates, I soon learned that there were many aspects of corporate life that my university education had not prepared me for.

From the practicalities of engaging contractors and managing a departmental budget to the more specialised skills associated with marketing in a B2B environment.

A lot of business, commerce, marketing, and communication degrees are geared towards business-to-consumer marketing and fail to address the unique qualities and challenges of B2B businesses.

Thankfully, I was taken under the wing of my manager, Katie Mitchell, who is a gifted marketer and remains a trusted mentor to this day. Her guidance, particularly in those first months as I was finding my feet in corporate life, built a strong foundation of practical skills and industry-specific knowledge that set my career on an accelerated trajectory.

Throughout my career, I have had the unique pleasure of working closely with many small-to-medium businesses in the B2B sector.

Many started as either sole traders or family-owned businesses and have found great success through their hard work and dedication to solving their customers’ problems.

I’ve witnessed the growing pains these businesses experience as they evaluate whether to hire a marketing resource.

Employing a senior marketer can feel like a risky investment; with higher salary expectations and a potential loss of control over the marketing function.

It often feels safer to hire a marketing graduate. They are more affordable and can be more easily moulded by the organisation.

However, without the leadership of a more senior marketer to guide the graduate’s development, they may lack the direction, confidence or expertise to thrive in the role and meet their employer’s expectations for marketing outcomes.

As a marketing mentor, I will work with your marketing graduates over the course of six months to accelerate their development as marketing professionals. The course is tailored to the capability of your graduate and the unique circumstances shaping your organisation.

Throughout the course, your graduate will develop skills that directly and immediately benefit your business, such as:

  • Developing an omni-channel marketing communications plan.
  • Creating a content suite.
  • Engaging and managing suppliers.
  • Managing a departmental budget.
  • Improving copywriting skills for different platforms such as social media, brochures and sales presentations.
  • Reporting marketing performance.
  • And more.
